Follow These Tips to Get the Best Outcome For Finishing Your Quilt:

  • Quilt backing should be at least 8” longer and wider than your quilt top (4” larger on all sides). This extra fabric is a must to be able to attach the quilt to the long arm.
  • If you piece your backing, be sure to trim the selvages off the inside seam as they shrink unevenly when you wash the quilt and create a puckered line. Use a ½” seam allowance and press the seams well.
  • Fold your quilt back in quarters using your rotary cutter and ruler to trim it. This squares up your quilt back so it is even, remembering to make your backing at least 8” longer and 8” wider than the quilt top.
  • If you choose a directional fabric for your backing, take that into account when piecing the backing together. If you would like me to piece together your backing, please overestimate the amount of fabric you need and make sure to provide enough fabric. If there is not enough fabric, I will either return it, or you will be asked to provide additional fabric. Either way, it will delay my ability to finish and return your quilt to you.
